Day 5 of the Journey

Today we are starting a new book, Mark. I am excited about this because we can compare Mark to Mathew. If you don't know all four gospels are of the same events just told from different perspectives. Someone once explained it to me as a car accident. If you have four pedestrians at four corners of an intersection and there is an accident, there will be 4 different observations to the same event. Same goes for the gospels. But pay attention because when God repeats himself, he means business.

Land covered today:

Mark:
1:8 - baptize with the Spirit
1:10 - Spirit descending like a dove
1:12 - Spirit lead Jesus
1:23 - evil spirit
1:26 - evil spirit
2:8 - jesus in His spirit knew...
3:29 - blasphamy against the Spirit
3:30 - evil spirit
5:2- evil spirit
5:8 - evil spirt
7:25 - evil spirt
9:17 - evil spirt
9:18 - evil spirt
9:20 - evil spirt
9:25 - evil spirt
9:26 - evil spirt
12:36- David spoke by the Spirit
13:11- it is not you speaking but the Spirit
14:38 - the spirit is willing but the body is weak

Discoveries:

  • The Spirit, not God, sent Jesus out into the desert.
  • David, a man in the old testament spike by the Holy Spirit
  • The Holy Spirit can speak through us his own words with our voice box.

Beast of the land that I am wrestling with this week:
In Mark 13:11 it says, "do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given to you at the time, for it is not you speaking, it is the the Holy Spirit." So the part I am wrestling with is the do not worry beforehand. Does this mean do not be anxious or does this mean do not plan what you are going to say, in fact, don't even think about it? I looked up the greek meaning of this worry and it is anxious before, it can still go either way though. I think I am leaning towards do not be anxious. I dont think this verse is a free pass for laziness, we still must be prepared but just rely on the Holy Spirit "bring it home" to whomever we are talking to. The reason I come to this conclusion is there are several verses that I can think of off the top of my head that tell up to plan and also not to worry or be anxious.
(Do not worry about tomorrow....) (Do not be anxious about anything....) (study to show yourself approved...) (prepare before you build a tower to know you have what is needed..)

The only new point in Mark about the Holy Spirit was 13:11, otherwise everything else was a repeat from Mathew..

Day 4 on the Journey

Land covered today:

Mathew 12:42- (evil spirits)
22:43
26:41   little s
27:50   little s
28:19

Discoveries:

  • Evil spirits can dwell in man.
  • David spoke by the Spirit.
  • Baptize in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit

Beast of the land that I am wrestling with this week:

  • David spoke by the Spirit... but yet the spirit was not yet given to them, hmm.

Own reflection:
Evil spirits can dwell in us and therefore if we do not have the Holy Spirit we may have other Spirits. It says that he (the evil spirit) searches for arid places to live.

Day 3 on the Journey

Land covered today:
Mathew 10:20
              12:18
              12:28
              12:31
              12:32

Discoveries:

  • The Spirit will speak on your behalf
  • From Isaiah.. quoted in Mathew, God put His Spirit on Jesus.
  • Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is unforgivable but against Jesus it is forgivable.

Beast of the land that I wrestled with today:
Why is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit not forgivable but against Jesus it is? The context around this verse is talking about whoever is not with me (Jesus) is against me. hmm...
Interesting fact....ALL sin and blasphemy is forgiven, just not against the Holy Spirit.

Interesting artifact:
I looked up Blasphemy-
The Greek work is blasphemeo- to insult, slander, curse. To speak abusively against.

Day 2 of the Journey.

One by one, I am going down the line in the Strong concordance, starting at Mathew.

All Spirits used today are 4460 pneuma- N. wind, breath, no material substance, the inner person that can respond to God.

I looked up the following verses and underlined them in my bible. I am not going to write out each verse in this adventure, rather, I am recording what I learned from the verses of who the Holy Spirit is.

Land explored today:

Mathew 1:18
              1:20
              3:11
              3:16
              4:1
              5:3

Discoveries:

  • Marry was "with child" THROUGH the Holy Spirit
  • He will baptize (meaning I looked up was "wash") you with the Spirt.
  • Spirit can descend in physical form (descended like a dove)
  • Jesus was led by the Spirit
  • Blessed are those who are poor in spirit (notice the lower case here)

The Beast of the Land I wrestled with this week:

How is one washed with the spirit? I need more information and scripture to understand this.

Blessed are those who are poor in spirit, I dont get this one at all. I know that it is not referencing the holy spirit because it is a little s but how is one to be poor in spirit?

New territory for me today (aka, things that stuck out)

The spirit can be seen in physical form.

Jesus (even though God) was led by the Spirit
What came to mind was that the Holy Spirit was like jesus's "helper suitable". Women, we are not alone, we to have a helper.... the Holy Spirit.

Day 1 of the Journey.

This is how its going to work for me; I am starting with discovering the different Greek names of the Holy Spirit listed in the Strongs NIV concordance and their meaning. Then I am doing the New Testament first, then joining my husband with the Old Testament. I am not sure how I will lay out the blog yet, but we will tackle that once we get there.

Here we go:
4460 pneuma
N. wind, breath, no material substance, the inner person that can respond to God.

4461 pneumatikos
A. pertaining to the spirit

4461 pneumatikos
Adv. spiritually figuratively

4780 python
N. spirit which predicted the future, spirit of divination

3358 logikos
spiritual logical

5922 Charisma
gracious gift

6035- psychikos
without spirit

899 autos
he, she, it, they....

One thing to note, there are spirits that are capitalized (Spirit) and spirits that are not capitalized (spirit). Although they have the same greek word some of them are not capitalized in text. This is very important when we are trying to discover who the author is referencing.

The beginning.

As of today, who is the Holy Spirit to you?

This is what Jamie and I came up with:

  • fog that hovers (Physical part of Him)
  • like a dove ((Physical part of Him)
  • Teacher
  • Encourager
  • Counselor
  • Coach
  • Empower-or
  • Convict-or
  • Angel on the shoulder

What comes to mind when you think of the Holy Spirit?

This is just me, not Jamie..
  • Benny Hin
  • people that speak in tongues
  • people that think they are better than you if they have the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • Miracles
  • abnormal behavior

Do you dare to go on an adventure?

I have trouble with the Holy Spirit. He is mis-used and displayed wrong by so many and not used enough by many more. Why is that? Why is it that I am intimidated by a God that lives in me and was a gift....so I think.
What I know of the Holy Spirit has been taught to me by others. Heres the problem with that... they all have a different view of who He is. So, my husband and I have set out on an adventure to discover the Untapped and Forgotten God.

I am not sure if I will keep up with this blog... if any of you know me, you will know that I am not much of a blogger type person. But, something in me has pushed me to start this blog... who knows it just might be the Holy Spirit. ;)

Heres how its going to go down. There are rules if you dare to play along. Rule number 1. No internet or outside resources allowed. A concordance and the bible is all thats allowed on this adventure. Rule number 2. No asking anyone else, (including pastors) any questions regarding your study. If you have a question you MUST ask God to reveal it to you through your study. Rule number 3. You must pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit each time you dive into your adventure. If you dare to come along this journey of discovering the best gift on earth, then grab your bible and dig in!! Beware it might get a little messy.
